Alberta’s police watchdog is looking into a Calgary police response that resulted in a young woman being injured by a police dog.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) say the incident occurred around 4:30 a.m. on Sunday at Glamorgan School in SW Calgary.
Officers were called to the area after an alarm at the school was triggered. When police arrived they found signs of a break‑in, including broken glass and a smashed window.
The K-9 unit was called in to assist the search.
Officers found an initial suspect inside the school and briefly withdrew, before re‑entering with the police dog while announcing their presence. Shortly after, the dog found a young woman and bit her during the encounter.
Paramedics took her to the Alberta Children’s Hospital for treatment.
ASIRT says the details released so far reflect only the information currently available, and the investigation remains active.
Anyone with information or video of the incident is asked to contact investigators at 780‑644‑1483.
ASIRT investigates any incidents involving police in Alberta that result in significant injury or death.
Earlier this week, ASIRT cleared officers of wrongdoing after a teen was bitten by a police dog in Calgary more than two years ago.
