Alberta’s police watchdog is investigating an incident where an on-duty police dog’s bite resulted in a teenager being taken to a hospital last weekend.
The bite happened after Calgary police responded to an alarm at Glamorgan School in the city’s southwest, just before 4:30 a.m. on Sunday.
The Police Review Commission directed the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) to investigate the bite.
On Sunday, officers found signs of forced entry outside the school, including a broken window, and called for additional help, a statement from the Police Review Commission said. After finding a suspect while searching the school, police briefly withdrew before returning with a police dog.
The commission said the officers announced their presence while they searched for suspects inside Glamorgan School.
A short time later, the dog found and bit a 16-year-old girl.
Emergency Medical Services were called, who transported the girl to the Alberta Children’s Hospital for treatment.
The commission directed ASIRT to investigate the dog bite as a Level 1 incident under the Police Act, a classification that refers to incidents involving serious injury or death, as well as serious or sensitive allegations involving police actions.
