Escondido Boxing Academy will hold an afternoon of amateur boxing matches May 24 at the gym on Quince Street.
Bouts for the “Summer Escondido Boxing Show” are scheduled to start at 1 p.m. Most of the boxers are Escondido residents and range in age from 8 to 16. The matches are sanctioned by USA Boxing.
Weigh-ins will be from 8 to 10 a.m., followed by physician check-ups.
Cost for spectators is $25, and $10 for kids under 10 years old. Proceeds benefit the academy’s programs and help pay for boxers’ entry fees and transportation to competitions.
Gibran Perez, a former amateur and professional boxer, started the academy in September 2024 in what had been a former uniform shop near Quince Street and Mission Avenue.
The gym primarily attracts children and teens who want to learn boxing, and in many cases, compete. Some parents and adults also train there.
“Many of the kids come from low-income families,” Perez said. “The gym provides an outlet to keep them away from bad influences. Boxing inspires them and gives them hope.”
