The federal government has announced a sweeping new plan to recruit and train up to 100,000 skilled trades workers as part of efforts to strengthen Canada’s economy and address labour shortages.
Mark Carney unveiled the “Team Canada Strong” initiative this week, a $6-billion program aimed at supporting young Canadians entering the trades and helping employers meet growing demand for skilled workers.
Officials say the program will focus on recruiting, training and hiring between 80,000 and 100,000 new Red Seal-certified workers over the next five years.

Addressing labour shortages
The government says the initiative comes as Canada faces increasing demand for tradespeople to support major infrastructure, housing and energy projects.
According to federal estimates, more than 1.4 million skilled trades workers will be needed by 2033.
Funding recruitment, training and hiring
The plan includes $2 billion to support paid placements that lead into apprenticeships, along with the creation of a new apprenticeship service to connect workers with employers.
Additional funding will go toward modernizing training programs, including digitizing certification processes and expanding union-led training capacity.
To encourage completion, the government will also introduce financial supports, including a $5,000 bonus for apprentices who achieve Red Seal certification and weekly income top-ups during training.
Support for military and northern training
The initiative also includes investments to expand trades training through the Canadian Armed Forces, including new programs for reservists and youth.
Officials say the goal is to provide more accessible pathways into the trades while strengthening Canada’s workforce in key sectors.
Focus on economic growth
The federal government says the program is part of a broader strategy to build infrastructure, expand housing and support economic development across the country.
Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said the initiative will help create meaningful career opportunities while addressing workforce gaps.
