Google has announced a major overhaul of its Fitbit app, transitioning it into a new AI-powered health and wellness platform as part of a broader push beyond basic fitness tracking.
According to a report by Business Standard, the transition will begin on May 19, when the Fitbit app will be replaced by the Google Health app featuring a redesigned interface, deeper artificial intelligence integration and expanded wellness capabilities.
Google stated that the new platform will integrate data from Fitbit devices, Pixel Watch, Health Connect and Apple Health to create a unified and more connected health experience for users.
The overhaul also introduces a Gemini-powered Google Health Coach, signalling a shift towards a more AI-led approach to personal health management. While the Fitbit app is being phased out, Google stated that Fitbit branding will continue across hardware devices, including the recently launched Fitbit Air, a lightweight, screenless device designed for continuous monitoring and passive wellness tracking.
The company had earlier initiated a public preview of new Fitbit health coaching features in the United States in March, which included support for medical records, improved sleep tracking and additional AI-driven health insights.
Google stated that the new Google Health app is structured around four primary sections – Today, Fitness, Sleep and Health — and includes customisable dashboards that allow users to prioritise specific metrics. It informed that the interface has been redesigned to improve navigation and provide quicker access to daily health insights.
The company also emphasised user control over personal data, stating that Fitbit health and wellness data will not be used for Google Ads and that users will be able to manage, delete or disable features as per their preferences.
The rollout of the Google Health app will begin automatically from May 19, with updated branding and a refreshed app icon. Google stated that existing users will not need to manually install the new app and can continue using their current devices while accessing the upgraded health platform.
