Manitoba Hydro crews are working to restore power amid an outage affecting 3,600 customers in downtown Winnipeg on Mother’s Day.
The utility said on social media posts, published at around 1 p.m., that Winnipeggers throughout the Osborne Village, Fort Rouge, Earl Grey and Crescentwood neighbourhoods were impacted by the outage.
Hydro spokesperson Peter Chura said the outage began at 12:30 p.m., and that crews were patrolling two spans of lines that feed three local substations to investigate what might have led to the outage.
Chura said he was personally impacted by outages during the holidays in the past, so he understand they can be “really inconvenient.”
“Unfortunately, power outages by their nature are unpredictable and we don’t know when and where they’re going to happen,” he said.
Winnipeg police said they were aware some traffic lights in the area had been affected by the outage.
Chura said the utility can’t provide estimates as to how long it will take to restore power since crews are still working to isolate the problem and understand what it will take to fix it.
