Lauren Sánchez is close to becoming an empty nester. The former journalist was candid about her feelings when her son Evan Whitesell left for college.
In an Instagram story posted on August 12, 2025, Lauren posted a photo of her son Evan building furniture. She captioned the story, “Dropped off Evan at college today. 18 years of early mornings, late night snacks and family dinners…. and then there he was building his own dorm cabinet.”
She continued: “A small thing but in that moment I saw the start of his next chapter. Proud. Heartbroken. Grateful.”
Evan is Lauren’s second child and first son with her ex-husband Patrick Whitesell. She also shares one child, Nikko, with ex-boyfriend Tony Gonzalez, and has a daughter, Ella, with Whitesell. She is also a stepmother to Bezos’ four kids with MacKenzie Scott.
Evan also picked up her affinity and hobby of flying helicopters. “There’s a special kind of trust that comes when you watch your kid take off on their own for the first time,” Sánchez Bezos wrote in a now-deleted Instagram video of her son flying. “It’s about letting go, but also knowing they’re more than ready. It’s terrifying, exhilarating, and so deeply rewarding all at once.”
While things are moving forward with her family, Lauren Sánchez and Jeff Bezos are currently demanding money from her brother, Michael, after a long legal battle. The feud between Jeff, Lauren, and Michael culminated when news broke of the Amazon founder and the former journalist’s relationship in 2018. Lauren was still married, but separated from her husband at the time.
The National Enquirer threatened to publish X-rated photos from their private texts, leading the SpaceX founder to write a blog post with descriptions of the photos. The New York Times reported that Lauren’s brother had signed a nondisclosure agreement about the couple’s alleged affair.
Page Six reported that Jeff and Lauren’s legal team filed a motion in California Superior Court demanding that Michael pay $182,374 in attorney’s fees and $8,182 in legal costs, “incurred in connection with (1) her successful Special Motion to Strike, and (2) this Motion for Attorney’s Fees and Costs.” The couple claimed their lawyers’ hourly rates range from $549 to $1,125.
Michael denied leaking texts and photos “below the belt” to the publication. In February 2020, Michael sued Jeff for defamation, calling the couple “liars and cheaters.” But Los Angeles County Superior Court ruled in the Amazon founder’s favor.
Her brother was not invited to Jeff and Lauren’s lavish $50 million wedding in Venice, Italy. In a June 2025 interview with The Times, Michael said that he hadn’t seen his sister in person since 2019 and hadn’t heard a word from her since 2020. Meanwhile, her two sons, Evan and Nikko, had huge roles in their $50M wedding by walking her down the aisle, and her daughter Ella, served as maid of honor.
