Sign unveiling celebrates funding for the York Region Mental Health Community Care Centre in Newmarket, expected to complete in 2027
Dignitaries gathered to unveil a sign marking the funding commitment to bring a new York Region mental health hub to life on Yonge Street in Newmarket.
A new Building Ontario sign went up for the York Region Mental Health Community Care Centre on May 8, under construction at 17255 Yonge St. The sign does not mark any new funding, but both provincial and regional governments have prior commitments to fund the project and bring it to fruition.
Canadian Mental Health Association York Region-South Simcoe interim CEO Frances Reinholdt said progress on the hub is continuing. The hub is tracking to open sometime in 2027, though the window could extend longer than the June 2027 date reported in November.
“We’ve been continuing to advance through the capital process with the Ministry of Health, and we are making really, really good progress,” she said.
The hub was first announced in June 2024, after many years of advocacy from CMHA and others. The hub will provide one-stop service for those seeking mental health treatment.
The Town of Newmarket has approved zoning for the project, and York Region committed $5 million in funding to support it . The provincial government committed $1 million last summer to cover early costs, though Reinholdt said funding is still being worked out.
Reinholdt said they hope to have their first client through the door in 2027.
“It’s a window,” she said. “There’s construction, and (it’s) sort of the timeline in terms of getting all of that done.”
The building sign makes reference to the $64 billion the provincial government is planning for in major health infrastructure over the next 10 years, including more than 50 major hospital projects.
