Most exercise studies happen in labs. Volunteers run on treadmills, answer mood surveys, and head home.
Researchers get controlled data, but they rarely see what happens during the rest of everyday life.
A team of scientists set out to follow more than 8,000 people through their actual days – tracking movement with wrist sensors and prompting them via phone throughout to ask how they felt.
The results were not what the researchers expected.
What gets people moving
Getting people to move more is a challenge that knowledge alone has never solved.
Researchers started asking whether mood – not public health messaging – is what actually drives people off the couch.
With collaborators in Salzburg, Karlsruhe, and Mannheim, the team asked a simpler question: How do people feel before and after the small motions of an ordinary day?
Professor Markus Reichert coordinated the project at the Ruhr University Bochum (RUB).
He spent years studying physical activity and mood outside the lab. This analysis aimed to settle a long-running tangle of conflicting findings.
“It has long been known that physical activity has a positive effect on well-being, but we used to only have evidence of this from lab and cross-sectional studies,” said Reichert.
The researchers gathered 67 separate datasets from 14 countries. They analyzed data on 8,223 participants who logged 321,345 mood check-ins on their phones.
Data from accelerometers – wrist-worn sensors that record every movement – added nearly one million hours of tracking.
Earlier work, captured in a review by the same group, had returned inconsistent results. This dataset was meant to resolve that.
Exercise and mood
People felt better after they moved more. They also moved more after they felt better. The headline result points both ways. No clear direction wins.
That pattern appeared both within individuals – on their better versus worse days – and across participants, with more active people generally reporting better moods than less active ones.
For the first time, both directions were confirmed using large-scale real-life data.
Energetic arousal was almost universal
One finding stood far apart from the rest. More than 95 percent of participants felt more energetic before or after physical activity. That kind of unanimity is uncommon in this research.
Researchers call the feeling energetic arousal – being awake, alert, ready to do something.
Walking briskly versus sitting was linked to a 0.62-point jump on a 4-point energy scale – the strongest bump of any mood measure they tracked.
Emotional changes after exercise
In this data, movement did not leave people feeling calmer. Many actually reported feeling less calm.
When the team measured how relaxed people felt before and after activity, the number went the wrong way. Walking instead of sitting was linked to a 0.22-point drop on a 4-point calmness scale.
Negative emotions – sadness, anger, anxiety – barely budged. People did not feel less anxious after walking, or sadder before sitting down.
A connection that dominates popular wellness writing didn’t appear in this data. That absence is, in its own way, a real finding.
Researchers had long suspected that activity would reduce negative feelings in the moment. The data, gathered across thousands of regular days, does not support this idea – at least not at the level of an immediate effect.
Bigger emotional changes may need bigger doses, longer arcs, or different kinds of movement.
Who benefits most
Group averages hide something. People differed – sometimes a lot.
A small fraction of participants actually felt worse before or after activity. Those with the lowest baseline moods gained the most.
“Our study also shows that persons with low well-being benefit in particular from physical activity,” said Onur Güntürkün, a co-author at the Ruhr University Bochum.
People who started in the worst mood saw the largest improvements. That hints at where the value lies – not for the already-active, but for those whose mental health is in a rough place.
Broader implications of the study
The takeaway is not that exercise is good for you – that was already known. What’s new is that the same consistent effect shows up in ordinary movement, not just structured exercise.
The 0.62-point energy boost linked to walking instead of sitting was not confined to a lab – it showed up across ordinary daily life.
Beyond mood scales, the data invites researchers toward biology.
Recent work, including a 2022 paper on how gut microbes may influence the urge to move, hints that something physical runs underneath the mood numbers.
For doctors working with patients experiencing low moods, the practical pivot is now backed by real-life data. There is now a stronger case for prescribing any kind of movement.
“Now our job for the coming years is to identify additional personal and contextual factors that can explain the differences in the correlations,” said Reichert.
The study is published in the journal Nature Human Behaviour.
