The Winnipeg Public Library is welcoming illustrator and comic artist Cato Cormier as its newest Maker-in-Residence at the Millennium Library this spring and summer.
Cormier will be based out of the library’s ideaMILL makerspace, where she will lead weekly drop-in studio sessions from May 25 to August 21, offering the public a chance to explore illustration, comics, zine-making, and animation.
Cormier, originally from Montreal and now living in Winnipeg, describes her creative work as “sometimes boisterous, sometimes sentimental,” featuring unusual and eccentric characters. At the heart of her practice, she says, is a focus on connection and community, often through humour.
“My practice encompasses drawing, painting, illustration, comic and zine making, and animation,” Cormier said. “I am excited to share my techniques and create a safe space for self-expression, learning, and community-building.”
The Maker-in-Residence program connects professional artists and makers with the public through open studio time and workshops designed to encourage hands-on learning and creative exploration.
The residency will take place at the Millennium Library in downtown Winnipeg.
