Environment Canada has issued a rare dust storm warning covering much of southern Manitoba, including Winnipeg, the Red River Valley, Westman, and parts of the Interlake.
The warning was issued Thursday afternoon as strong westerly winds kicked up blowing dust across the region, creating poor visibility and hazardous travel conditions.
Environment Canada says visibility could suddenly drop in some areas through the afternoon and into the evening. Poor air quality is also expected while the dust storm continues.
The weather agency says the blowing dust is expected to ease later Thursday evening as winds begin to weaken.
Wind warnings had already been issued earlier in the day as speeds are expected to reach 100 km/h in some parts of southern Manitoba.
Drivers are being urged to turn on their headlights, slow down, and leave extra space between vehicles if they encounter reduced visibility on highways.
Dust storm warnings are uncommon in Manitoba and are issued when widespread blowing dust is expected to significantly reduce visibility.
