The Edwardsville boys tennis team is closing in on another Southwestern Conference championship.
The Tigers swept all three doubles flights Thursday at O’Fallon High School to finish the first day of the SWC Tournament with 18 points. Edwardsville is chasing its 25th straight conference title.
O’Fallon is second with 13 points, followed by Belleville West with 12 and Belleville East with 11.
The tournament concludes May 15 with six singles flights at O’Fallon and Belleville East.
At No. 1 doubles, Edwardsville’s Schaefer Bates and Isaac Chleboun went 2-0 after receiving a first-round bye. Bates and Chleboun defeated Belleville West’s Landon Kinder and Jay Naylor 6-3, 6-2 in the championship match.
At No. 2 doubles, Edwardsville’s Jake Brinker and Brandon Wong also received a first-round bye before winning twice, including a victory over O’Fallon’s Dylan Carter and Derek Guetterman in the championship match.
At No. 3 doubles, John Almos and Lucas Rudd completed the sweep for the Tigers. After a first-round bye, Almos and Rudd won two matches, capped by a 6-4, 6-2 victory over O’Fallon’s Cole Gallagher and Cooper Baskett in the final.
Edwardsville went 5-0 in SWC play during the regular season, while O’Fallon finished second at 4-1.
