Ottawa firefighters said someone living in a townhome unit near the north end of central Ottawa’s Russell Road died in a fire late Thursday.
They said in a news release they were called around 10:50 p.m. to the end unit of a townhome complex. Fire there had spread to the neighbouring unit, they said.
Four people were able to get out of their home, they said, but one resident couldn’t get out and died. Firefighters didn’t share their name.
Ten people have been forced from their homes and are getting support from the Red Cross, according to the news release.
Three other adults were checked for minor injuries, according to Ottawa paramedics.
The fire, which was under control by midnight, is under investigation by firefighters, Ottawa police and the province’s fire marshal.
