WestJet flights between Calgary and Campbell River kicked off Friday

The first WestJet flight connecting Calgary and Campbell River touched down at the airport shortly after noon on Friday, heralding the start of non-stop service to one of Canada’s key aviation hubs.
“Today represents more than a new route on a map, it’s a significant investment in our community and a strong vote of confidence in Campbell River’s future,” said Campbell River Mayor Kermit Dahl, during an event celebrating the new service on May 15.
“As mayor, and after seven years serving on council, I can honestly say that strengthening our airport and improving regional connectivity has always been one of my top priorities.”
“Reliable air service is critical economic growth, tourism, business development, health-care access and keeping families connected,” Dahl added.
The seasonal WestJet flights will operate between May and October, four days a week, except from June 22 to Sept. 6, when flights will operate daily.
With mid-day departure timing, the new service is designed around how people prefer to travel, according to WestJet. The flight service offers a more convenient, relaxed start to the journey while enabling smooth same-day connections through Calgary to destinations across Canada, the United States and beyond.
“We’re seeing good passenger numbers on the initial weekend, which is extremely positive,” said Dennis Brodie, the Campbell River Airport manager. “We hope that the region will continue support the Campbell River airport and this route in particular and see what additional offerings we can provide in the future.”
Brodie noted the forecasted demands from the airline indicate strong route support.
“This goes to show that scalable growth in the air sector is possible in the region without massive investments,” he said. “The infrastructure at this airport can support this service quite handily and we strongly feel that future growth in Campbell River is achievable.”
WestJet is the second airline to announce new seasonal flights to Campbell River. Last fall, Harbour Air said it was adding Campbell River as a destination to its flight schedule, along with several new locations departing from Vancouver.
