Vancouver delight for big Mayo football contingent

MAYO players were to the fore in Vancouver recently when the local Éire Óg team clinched the senior league title. The final pitted the men in black against St Finians and it was a thrilling encounter which went right down to the wire. The teams were locked together in injury-time when Éire Óg were awarded a long-range free and Mikey Higgins was called for. The Claremorris man hit the ball straight between the posts to win the game and clinch the title at the end of a well-contested league campaign.

Vancouver Éire Óg has a strong Mayo core and this was clearly evident in the league final. Higgins was joined on the team by fellow Claremorris man Daniel Murphy, Hollymount Carramore’s Joe Lydon, Sean Keane from Mayo Gaels and Garrymore’s Stephen Ferriter.

Other Mayo men who are part of the Éire Óg squad, but were unavailable for the final are Stephen McGreal from Claremorris, Cathal Carney from Ballyhaunis and Hollymount Carramore’s Cathal Maloney.

Swinford’s JP McLoughlin is an integral part of Éire Óg and was a proud coach when he spoke to The Mayo News after the final whistle. He was delighted with the victory and emphasised the welcoming community which has been built up around the club.

“It’s nice to win the league again and we’re looking forward to a good summer of football. Of course, it’s nice to have a few fellow Mayo players in, especially the new players who have joined our Vancover Éire Óg community and settled in well to the club and life here in the city.”

The Vancouver senior championship will take place over the summer months and Éire Óg will be trying to complete the league and championship double.
