Surrey sees 17th extortion-related shooting of the year

Police in Surrey are investigating an extortion-related shooting at a home in Surrey’s Newton neighbourhood in the early morning hours of May 20.
Police responded to a shooting at around 4:40 a.m. in the 5700-block of 148 Street. Officers found that a home in the area had been damaged by gunfire, and there was “evidence of shots fired.”
“The residence was occupied at the time of the shooting and, fortunately, no one was injured,” Surrey police media relations officer Sgt. Ali Gailus.
The Surrey Police extortion response team is investigating the shooting and the Integrated Forensic Identification Services team will be in the area looking for evidence. Investigators believe the shooting is extortion-related.

To date, there have been 108 reported extortions, 17 shots fired, two arsons and 59 victims (27 repeat) in Surrey this year.
