A Peel Regional Police cruiser was involved in a collision with a vehicle that fled from officers during an attempted traffic stop in Brampton early Thursday morning, leaving one man in hospital and multiple vehicles damaged.
The crash happened after 1 a.m. near Van Kirk Drive and Sandalwood Parkway.
According to police, officers initially attempted to stop a vehicle in the area of Rutherford Road and Orenda Road. Investigators say the driver failed to stop and fled the area.
Police said there was no pursuit following the attempted stop.
Officers later located the vehicle near Van Kirk Drive and Sandalwood Parkway, where a collision involving a Peel police cruiser occurred. The exact circumstances leading up to the crash remain under investigation.
Video from the scene showed at least six vehicles gathered around the intersection, including a heavily damaged black car believed to be at the centre of the incident. A Peel police canine unit vehicle also appeared to have sustained damage, with airbags deployed and doors left open following the collision.
Another police cruiser was positioned directly in front of the damaged vehicle, while several unmarked black vehicles surrounded the scene as officers continued their investigation.
Peel paramedics said one adult male was assessed at the scene before being transported to hospital in stable condition. Police later described the injuries as non-life-threatening.
Van Kirk Drive remained closed between Cedarvalley Boulevard and Sandalwood Parkway for several hours Thursday morning as investigators examined the scene. Police said the closures would remain in place “for the foreseeable future.”
The investigation is ongoing.
