An overnight shooting on Highway 401 in Mississauga has sent one person to hospital and police on the hunt for the shooter.
Ontario Provincial Police said they received reports of “possible gunfire” that erupted at around 12:20 a.m. on Friday on the busy highway near Mavis Road in the central part of the city.
Reports to police indicated the shots rang out in the eastbound collector lanes.
Subsequent investigation determined that one person who was travelling inside a vehicle sustained minor injuries “after being struck by debris from a broken window,” police said in a news release Friday morning.
The person was taken to hospital as a precaution, police added.
Investigators believe there is no wider threat to public safety at this time.
Though the investigation is being conducted by OPP, Peel Regional Police said they initially responded as the victim had pulled off the highway and called them to report the shooting.
According to reports, the victim, who was travelling in an SUV, pulled into a gas station in Mississauga’s north end just prior to making the call to police.
The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information or dashcam footage near the time and location of this incident is asked to call police at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.
