Local athlete does Salmon Arm boxing club proud in Puerto Rico

Jackson Mitchell did his Salmon Arm boxing club proud in Puerto Rico.
Bulldogs Boxing coaches Peggy Maerz and Jordyn Konrad accompanied Mitchell to the U.S. territory where he spent 10 days (May 7-17) training, adapting and competing alongside Boxing BC’s Youth and U19 team.
Mitchell dominated in the ring, securing a flawless three‑for‑three record and related hardware.
Konrad said Mitchell’s first fight was unscheduled, taking place the day after their arrival.
When the unexpected opportunity arose, she said Mitchell stepped in without hesitation, adding the “impromptu matchup revealed something essential” about his development.
“He showed he could adapt and be ready at any moment, which is key at this level. You’ve got to take advantage of opportunities when they arise,” said Konrad in a news release.
Konrad said the early win gave Mitchell momentum heading into the next day’s bout, “where he showcased his technical skill and ring IQ, out‑boxing his Puerto Rican opponent with confidence and control.”
“After the second match, Mitchell regrouped with Team BC, focusing on staying sharp and adjusting to the intense humidity and heat – conditions far different from home,” said Konrad.
“The preparation paid off, allowing for micro-adjustments for upcoming matches.
“In his final match the following weekend, Mitchell once again rose to the occasion, beating both the heat and his opponent to secure his third straight victory.
“Two of the wins came by stoppage, the other was by unanimous decision.”
Konrad praised Mitchell’s performance and growth.
“We are very proud of Jackson’s performance and how he has grown over the last couple of months, and even over the span of the trip,” said Konrad. “He has great skill and ring IQ. It was nice to see him box and use the tools needed while also dealing with conditions he isn’t used to.”
Konrad boxed in Puerto Rico three years ago and knew it was a place she wanted to bring athletes. She explained the Bulldogs Provincial Development Team, launched almost three years ago, has been working toward opportunities like this “and Mitchell was ready!”
“His hard work and dedication to the sport is paying off,” Konrad said. “It’s showing not only provincially but also against international competitors.
“Mitchell’s undefeated run in Puerto Rico is another milestone for Bulldogs Boxing, a club that continues to prove it can produce athletes capable of performing – and winning – on the international stage.”
