As part of the commitment to a doping-free boxing, the World Boxing Council (WBC) Clean Boxing Program and the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) keep oxandrolone on their list of prohibited substances, as it is an anabolic steroid with a high potential to illicitly improve physical performance.

Oxandrolone, also known as Anavar, was developed for medical use in cases of extreme weight loss, recovery from severe burns, and treatment of certain diseases. However, its ability to increase muscle mass and strength has made it a recurring substance in doping cases, which led to its absolute ban in sports.

According to specialists, the uncontrolled use of this compound can cause severe liver damage, cardiovascular alterations, and, in women, virilization symptoms. Therefore, VADA considers it a threat to both the athlete’s health and the fairness of the competition.

In boxing, the vigilance over this type of substance is reinforced through the World Boxing Council (WBC) Clean Boxing Program, which was implemented in coordination with VADA in 2016 and to date maintains strict control over harmful and prohibited substances for boxing.
