Newton Athletic Park was busy during four days of high school ultimate championships Saturday through Tuesday (May 23-26) — more evidence that the disc sport is growing in popularity among school teams in B.C.
First up, on Saturday and Sunday, was the BC Ultimate High School Championships for junior teams, along with an invitational tournament for junior and senior teams that didn’t qualify for provincials.
Then on Monday and Tuesday (May 25-26), the big park on 128 Street hosted the BC School Sports-sanctioned provincial championship tournament involving 32 teams from across B.C. in 3A and 2A divisions, four pools each.
Three Surrey school teams played in 3A (Guildford Park, Semiahmoo and Kwantlen Park), along with one in 2A (Surrey Christian).
During Tuesday’s championship round, Guildford Park Sabres made the 3A division semifinal where they lost 13-9 to Vancouver’s Eric Hamber team, eventual provincial champs. Later in the day, after losing the bronze-medal game to Mount Douglas, Guildford Park’s senior ultimate team finished fourth in B.C. — pretty much where they ranked all spring.
In 2A, Vancouver Christian won the provincial banner.

Earlier at Newton Athletic Park (May 12), the South Fraser regional championships saw 84 senior and junior teams from Surrey, Delta and Richmond compete for 3A and 2A division bragging rights.
