EDMONTON — Albertans dealing with obesity can now access a new, publicly paid-for procedure that would see their stomach stitched up from the inside.

It’s called endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty, and Edmonton’s Royal Alexandra Hospital is the first one in Canada to offer it.

It’s a 90-minute procedure where a thin flexible tube with a camera is pushed down the patient’s throat and into the stomach.

Tiny tools are then used inside the tube to stitch up the stomach to reduce its size.

Surgeon Dr. Noah Switzer says patients can often go home the same day and that the procedure can be used alongside weight loss medications like Ozempic and Wegovy.

So far 10 patients have received the treatment.
