Tuesday rapid round-up…
Day 3 marked the end of first-round matches – it was hot, it was lively and it threw up a few surprises.
Here’s a summary of the action:
Alex Sharp’s first assignment was on Chatrier, where Aryna Sabalenka moved into the second round with little trouble, seeing off Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in straight sets.
Chris Oddo did some extra homework and put together this lovely tribute to Gael Monfils. He then nipped into Court Suzanne-Lenglen to watch an extraordinary see-saw of a match between Australian wildcard Adam Walton and No.6 seed Daniil Medvedev. Walton came through the encounter with a remarkable 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 scoreline. Not done, Chris then moved on to Chatrier to watch Coco Gauff edge past her friend and compatriot Taylor Townsend.

Dan Imhoff headed over to Court Simonne-Mathieu and witnessed one of those great surprises that are occasionally thrown up – 17-year-old French wildcard Moise Kouame took down former world No.3 Marin Cilic, who was appearing in his 18th Roland-Garros. Dan then had quite the late night as Felix Auger-Aliassime took more than four hours to get past dangerous German Daniel Altmaier on Court Suzanne-Lenglen.
Taking up her regular position overseeing the night match, Victoria Chiesa had a relatively short assignment this time as Jannik Sinner swept past French wildcard Clement Tabur under the lights on Chatrier.
We also celebrated Althea Gibson, 70 years after her title at Roland-Garros, making her the first Black woman to win a Grand Slam.
