Calgary police are warning drivers about excessive speed, suspected street racing and alcohol-related roadside penalties after posting several recent traffic stops tied to road safety.

The Calgary Police Service highlighted the incidents in three social media posts this week, including a 19-year-old driver police say accelerated to 192 km/h on Stoney Trail.
Driver arrested after 192 km/h stop
CPS said officers stopped a 19-year-old driver at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 22, on Stoney Trail at Macleod Trail S.
According to police, the vehicle was travelling 154 km/h before accelerating to 192 km/h.
The driver was arrested for dangerous driving and flight from a peace officer, and the vehicle was towed, CPS said.
“Speed limits & road rules exist to protect everyone. Ignoring them puts lives at risk,” police said in the post.
Roadside alcohol warning issued
In another post, CPS said officers stopped a vehicle at about 9:10 a.m. on Friday, May 22, on 52 Street at Erin Woods Drive S.E.
Police said the vehicle was unable to maintain the centre of its lane.
The driver was issued a Mandatory Alcohol Screening demand, resulting in a WARN, according to CPS.
Under Alberta’s Immediate Roadside Sanctions program, police said the driver received an immediate three-day licence suspension and vehicle seizure.
The driver was also issued a ticket for failing to maintain the centre of the driving lane.
“Even lower levels of impairment can impact your driving. Make responsible choices to keep everyone on the road safe,” CPS said in the post.
Suspected street racing stop
CPS also posted about a May 9 traffic stop in southeast Calgary.
Police said at 11:19 p.m. on Saturday, May 9, officers clocked a car travelling west on 76 Avenue at 57 Street S.E. at 137 km/h in a 50 km/h zone.
Police said it is believed the driver was street racing.
According to CPS, the driver had no insurance, no registration and could not produce a driver’s licence.
The driver’s vehicle was seized, and the driver also received fines and a court summons, police said.
“Street racing is illegal & can have severe consequences, including injury & death. We will continue to patrol areas where these dangerous behaviours occur,” CPS said.
