Brampton residents are being encouraged to take simple steps to better protect their homes and strengthen connections within their neighbourhoods through a new community safety guide developed by the city and Peel Regional Police.

The City of Brampton’s Community Safety and Well-Being Office (CSWO) recently launched Hello Neighbour: A Guide to Safer Homes and Community, a resource aimed at helping residents reduce property-related crime while building safer and more connected communities.

The guide offers practical safety tips, neighbourhood-building ideas and home security checklists inspired by Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED), a strategy that focuses on how well-designed and well-maintained spaces can help deter crime and improve overall well-being.

City officials say the guide emphasizes that community safety starts with everyday actions, from improving lighting and securing property to maintaining shared spaces and getting to know neighbours.

Residents are also invited to complete a CPTED checklist included in the guide and submit it to the CSWO to discuss the results and identify potential improvements for their properties and neighbourhoods.

According to the city, the guide supports Brampton’s broader Community Safety Action Plan and aligns with Ontario’s Community Safety and Well-Being Framework, which promotes prevention-focused approaches to addressing crime and social challenges.

The resource was first introduced to Brampton’s affiliated neighbourhood associations during Community Safety Month last November. Feedback from community members helped shape the final version of the guide.

The city says the guide is intended for homeowners, tenants, property managers and community leaders looking for practical ways to improve safety and strengthen neighbourhood connections.
