A man was killed at an apartment block in the 700 block of Sargent Avenue on Sunday. People at the apartment, which is a supported-living home for men, say the incident happened over the lunch hour.

The crime took place around 11 a.m., police said, when a fight broke out in the basement of the building.

A resident of the complex at 751 Sargent Ave., which offers supported living for men, said he heard “yelling and screaming” in the building before the stabbing, but said he stayed in his room.

When he left his suite, he said evidence of the crime was obvious.

“When I came out, there was just blood everywhere and the forensic guys were here and they were taking pictures and measuring out blood… they had everything cordoned off.”

Tenants confirmed the accused lived in the building.

Some who knew the victim said he was a person who was always willing to help, even going to the store for him on occasion.

“It’s really a shock,” he said. “You don’t expect something like this to happen, especially to a good guy like him.”
