The company constructing Edmonton’s Valley Line West LRT line has been fined $120,000 after a worker was seriously injured on the job three years ago.
Marigold Infrastructure Partners Inc. has been convicted of one count under the Occupational Health and Safety Code for failing to ensure equipment, including a hydraulic jack, was safely restrained to eliminate potential danger to the injured employee.
In a news release Friday, provincial safety officials said the Edmonton-based construction company pleaded guilty to the workplace violation on May 26 in the Edmonton Court of Justice.
According to the investigation, the worker — an employee of Marigold Infrastructure — was hurt on June 23, 2023, while crews were completing post-tensioning of a segment of the Valley Line West project.
The work involves compressing the concrete sections of a bridge or guideway using high-strength steel cables after the concrete has hardened.
During the incident, as one of the jacks pressured up, the concrete crumbled, causing the tensioning bar and jack to break free and strike the worker.
Marigold Infrastructure Partners was selected to construct the Valley Line West LRT in 2020.
The project, which has a new 14-kilometre stretch of light rail being constructed from downtown to the neighbourhoods of Lewis Farms in the city’s far west, is expected to be completed in 2028.
According to the provincial news release issued Friday, all other charges in the case have now been withdrawn.
The company and the Crown have up to 30 days to launch an appeal of the fine or conviction issued by the court.
