Cyclists at the starting line for Tour la Nuit were met with disappointment last night after the popular Montreal event was cancelled due to thunderstorms and high winds.
Vélo Québec — the organization behind the Go vélo Montréal festival — issued a statement on Friday evening, noting the weather conditions meant the safety of riders could not be guaranteed.
“Until the very last moment, the teams from Vélo Québec, the City of Montreal, and the Montreal Police Service collaborated to find a solution to ensure the safety of the route. Despite all their efforts, no safe option could be adopted,” the statement reads.
Tour la Nuit was set to run until midnight and would have taken cyclists on a 24-kilometre from Jarry Park to the northern edge of the Ahuntsic-Cartierville borough and back around.
Vélo Québec said those who registered for Friday’s event will be able to participate in Tour de l’Île, taking place Sunday, using their bib numbers.
The daytime event of Tour de l’Île will utilize a 50-kilometre course looping around the city’s downtown core, Mount Royal Park and the Frédéric-Back park in the Villeray—Saint-Michel—Parc-Extension borough.
