Residents of a Port Credit neighbourhood in Mississauga are being asked to shelter in place or evacuate as police dispose of a “military artifact” that has been located in a backyard in Mississauga, Peel police say.
Officers were called to a residence in the area of Elmwood Avenue South and Lakeshore Road East at 12:44 p.m.
Police say a resident located the artifact among a family member’s older belongings.
“Preliminary assessment suggests it is a smoke device that would not produce shrapnel, only smoke,” a Peel police spokesperson said in an email to CP24.
“Our Explosive Disposal Unit is currently en route and is expected to safely dispose of the device shortly.”
Officers are going door to door to speak with residents.
The spokesperson said residents in the immediate area are bein advised to shelter in place or evacuate “out of an abundance of caution.”
Police are also asking the public to avoid the area.
