We have new information regarding Montreal Canadiens defenseman Kaiden Guhle, and it confirms what many suspected.
Guhle was indeed playing through an injury, and we’re talking about a significant one.
Karine Hains (The Hockey News) has officially confirmed what several people had suspected since at least Game 4 between the Montreal Canadiens and Carolina Hurricanes.
The young defenseman was clearly dealing with a serious injury.
His reactions last night left little room for doubt.
“We thought Guhle was injured; now we have evidence. His face as he got up there said it all. Even if he wanted to play, it was up to the coach to say no; I need someone who will be 100% out there.”

Let’s be clear: Guhle was obviously struggling during the game and was nowhere near 100%. He probably wasn’t even at 50%, and a young player like Arber Xhekaj could very well have replaced him and performed better.
The issue is that knee injuries can worsen if they are not treated properly.
And playing an intense playoff game on an existing injury significantly increases the long-term risks. Especially in Guhle’s case, where injuries have already been a recurring concern throughout his career.
For Martin St. Louis, this is probably a difficult situation to process today as well.
The Quebec-born head coach may have been better off prioritizing the long-term health of his young defenseman.
Inserting Arber Xhekaj into the lineup could potentially have been the better option.
He clearly preferred Guhle’s experience despite his physical limitations, but was that the right decision?
It’s important to understand that in the context of a potential elimination game, many head coaches likely would have made the same choice.
The problem is that the final result did not justify the decision.
