The Ontario Provincial Police continue to investigate a fatal three-vehicle collision on Highway 15 in Lombardy that claimed the life of one man and left several others injured, including two paramedics.
Emergency crews responded to the collision between County Road 1 and County Road 5, near Otter Lake Park, at approximately 5 p.m. on Friday, May 29.
Police say on Saturday, May 30 that the crash involved two passenger vehicles and an ambulance that was returning to base with no patients onboard.
The driver of one of the vehicles, a 34-year-old man from Elizabethtown-Kitley, was pronounced dead at the scene.
A young child who was travelling in the same vehicle was airlifted to a trauma centre by Ornge air ambulance with life-threatening injuries.
The driver and passenger of the ambulance were also taken to hospital with serious injuries.
In an update issued Saturday, Leeds Grenville Paramedic Service said both paramedics were transported to The Ottawa Hospital.
“The two paramedics involved were transported to The Ottawa Hospital – Civic Campus, where they were treated for their injuries and have since been released,” the service said in a media release.
The driver and sole occupant of the third vehicle suffered minor injuries and was also transported to hospital.
Leeds Grenville Paramedic Service says it is working closely with partner agencies as the investigation continues.
“As this process is ongoing, we will not be providing further details at this time,” the service said.
“We extend our sincere thanks to all emergency responders who attended the scene for their professionalism and care.
“Our thoughts are with everyone involved and all those affected by this incident.”
Leeds Thousand Islands Fire Service, Leeds Grenville Paramedic Service and OPP Technical Collision Investigators and Reconstructionists assisted at the scene.
Highway 15 was closed for several hours following the collision but reopened Saturday morning.
