Nikita Shcherbakov is a left-shot defenseman born on October 23, 2007, in Chelyabinsk. The Russian blueliner possesses an impressive frame, standing 6-foot-5 and weighing 187 pounds. This season, he played primarily in the VHL, Russia’s second-tier professional league directly below the Kontinental Hockey League. He also appeared in a handful of games at the junior level in the Molodezhnaya Hokkeinaya Liga. Shcherbakov is a defenseman who can regularly be found near the end of many analysts’ first-round rankings. Ahead of the 2026 NHL Draft, Nikita Shcherbakov ranks 13th among European skaters according to the NHL Central Scouting.

2025-2026 Statistics
Nikita Shcherbakov is a defenseman developing within the same organization as Alan Shaikhlislamov and Alexander Zharovsky. This season in Ufa, Shcherbakov played 35 games in the VHL, recording 4 goals and 6 assists. He also appeared in 15 MHL games, collecting 10 assists, and suited up for 7 KHL games, where he was held pointless. Unfortunately, he was unable to participate in the playoffs at any of the three levels. One notable statistical detail: three of Shcherbakov’s four VHL goals came in the same game, on February 5 against Kazan.
As expected, his ice time varied significantly depending on the league. In the KHL, he averaged roughly six minutes per game and was not used on special teams. In the VHL, his average ice time increased to approximately 15 minutes per game, with occasional power-play opportunities. Finally, in the MHL, Shcherbakov averaged around 18 minutes per game and was utilized on both the power play and penalty kill.
Combining his statistics from all three leagues, Nikita Shcherbakov averaged fewer than one hit per game. He also generated approximately 2.5 shot attempts per contest. However, his puck-management numbers were quite encouraging. He averaged 5.7 takeaways per game compared to 2.8 giveaways per game, while posting an impressive 91% passing efficiency rate.

Big defenseman who spent a significant portion of the season playing in the VHL. I didn’t dislike what I saw, but he didn’t always look comfortable at that level. The main issue stems from his lack of pre-scan awareness before making plays. The Russian skates well and has little trouble escaping pressure when he has possession of the puck deep in his own zone. Whether through strong footwork or a bit of finesse, he can work his way out of trouble. However, he often holds onto the puck for too long, allowing opponents time to adjust. He really needs to improve both the speed of his execution and his ability to evaluate options in real time.
It’s great to evade two forecheckers, but if you fail to anticipate the third one and end up simply throwing the puck away despite having passing options available, then the result isn’t much better. The same issue appears throughout the ice. He will aggressively jump forward to intercept an opposing pass, but he sometimes misjudges the angle and gets beaten too easily, creating an odd-man situation against his team. Offensively, we’ve seen flashes of skill with the puck and some intriguing dynamism. It wasn’t frequent, nor was it truly elite, but it does make you wonder whether there is more offensive upside in his game than he has shown so far. In short, while some evaluators viewed him as a first-round prospect during the season, I’m not quite there personally. I have him ranked further down my board.
