On Sunday, Rafael Jodar erased a two-set deficit to defeat Spanish compatriot Pablo Carreno Busta in five sets.
The 19-year-old’s ascension has been meteoric, a year removed from playing collegiately at the University of Virginia.
Jodar found his rhythm in the last three sets, committing only 19 unforced errors.
In the quarterfinal, Jodar will face No. 2 seed Alexander Zverev, who defeated Jesper de Jong in straight sets to continue his pursuit of a first Grand Slam title.
The top-ranked German played an all-around perfect match, excelling on first serve, at the net, and from the baseline.
In one of the final two men’s matches of the day, Joao Fonseca defeated Casper Ruud in four sets.
Ruud caused significant problems for Fonseca with his relentless defense and stellar shot-making abilities.
After winning the third set, Ruud emerged the more energized player as Fonseca began to feel the effects of coming off back-to-back five-set matches.
However, Ruud was unable to capitalize on that, committing a number of unforced errors at crucial moments.
The No. 29 seed will face 20-year-old Jakub Mensik in the quarterfinal.
After taking a two-set-to-love lead, Mensik’s opponent, Andrey Rublev, launched a furious comeback, eventually sending the match to five sets.
In the final set, Mensik relied on his serve and consistent play to secure victory.
Round of 16 action continues tomorrow on TNT, which will broadcast live from Roland-Garros starting at 5 a.m. ET. There will also be whip-around coverage on truTV at the same time, while all courts will stream live on HBO Max.

Juan Manuel Cerdundolo has had one of the most impressive-yet-unlikely runs we’ve ever seen.
After overcoming a two-set-to-love deficit against top-ranked Jannik Sinner, who was hampered by cramps, Cerundolo followed suit by defeating Martin Landaluce in a five-hour, 57-minute thriller, the third-longest French Open match in the Open Era.
In the Round of 16, the 25-year-old Argentinian will face Matteo Berretini, who is also coming off a thrilling five-set, five-hour win.
This is one of the more intriguing matches.
Berrettini has one of the best serves on tour and a booming forehand that usually helps him navigate trouble.
Meanwhile, Cerdunolo is a clay-court specialist who won’t overpower you but will instead overwhelm you with his baseline rally discipline, court coverage, and grit.
If Cerundolo sticks true to his game style and can target Berrettini’s backhand, he is capable of continuing his magical run.
