With the FIFA World Cup of soccer set to kick off on Canadian soil in less than two weeks, Mississauga will have a pair of local connections to cheer for after Canada unveiled its final 26-man roster on Friday.

Among those named by head coach Jesse Marsch were forward Tani Oluwaseyi, a Mississauga native, and midfielder Liam Millar, who spent part of his youth career with North Mississauga Soccer Club.

Born in Nigeria, Oluwaseyi has lived in Mississauga since the age of 10. He attended St. Joan of Arc Catholic Secondary School in Churchill Meadows, where he captained the Angels to a 17–0 record and a Provincial High School Championship. As a senior, he scored 30 goals and tallied 10 assists. He was also a three-time MVP of the boys soccer team, scoring a total of 68 times over a four-year career.

He attended St. John’s University in New York City, and the now 26-year-old plays professionally with Minnesota United in Major League Soccer and has emerged as one of Canada’s rising attacking options. His inclusion marks a significant milestone for a player who grew up in Mississauga dreaming of representing his country on the world stage.

Millar, also 26, was born in Toronto but has strong ties to Mississauga soccer through North Mississauga SC, one of the region’s largest youth clubs. After developing in Canada, he moved to England as a teenager and has gone on to play professionally in Europe while becoming a regular member of the national team setup.

The selections come as Canada prepares for the biggest tournament in the country’s soccer history. The 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by Canada, the United States and Mexico, runs from June 11 to July 19 and features an expanded 48-team field.

Before the tournament begins, Canada will play tune-up matches against Uzbekistan on June 1 and Ireland on June 5.

Canada opens World Cup play on June 12 in Toronto against Bosnia and Herzegovina before heading west to Vancouver for group-stage matches against Qatar on June 18 and Switzerland on June 24.

For soccer fans in Mississauga, the roster announcement guarantees a local stake in a historic summer as Canada prepares to host the world’s biggest sporting event.
