The Surrey Police Service noted that the officers responded to the site after reports of gunfire and later confirmed damage to both a residence and a vehicle. The authorities assured that no one was injured.

22-year-old Damanjeet Singh and 30-year-old Pardaman Singh were arrested during the operation. Both men have been charged with discharging a firearm into a place, knowing or being reckless as to whether someone was present. They were also charged with possession of a restricted or prohibited firearm without a licence.

Both men remain in custody

In the statement, the authorities noted that both men remained in custody. It is pertinent to note that Damanjeet Singh was due in court on May 19. Meanwhile, Pardaman Singh is scheduled to appear on June 1.

Apart from this, Surrey Police Service confirmed that both the accused were foreign nationals and not Canadian citizens. Hence, Canada Border Services Agency has been engaged in the matter. Authorities have released photographs of the accused, saying that the disclosure is necessary to assist ongoing investigations.

The authorities are looking to identify wider criminal networks connected to violent extortion cases. It is important to note that the latest incident is coming amid growing concern in Canada over extortion-related violence targeting
South Asian communities.

In light of this, the financial intelligence agency FINTRAC issued a bulletin warning of a sustained campaign involving “financially vulnerable, young male Indian nationals in Canada on study permits who are being used as foot soldiers by gangs for targeted violence” against diaspora communities.
