A 23-year-old woman is in custody after a newborn child was found dead in Brampton Sunday, Peel police say.

Officers responded to a call about an incident near Kennedy Road N. and Williams Parkway just before 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Peel police said in a post on X. Officers found a child dead inside a residence in the area.

The woman has been charged with concealing the body of a child after birth, said Det. Sgt. Matthew Miller. She has received medical attention in custody and is being held pending a bail hearing.

“Incidents of this nature are deeply disturbing,” Miller said, adding that officers involved are “being provided with appropriate mental support as they continue to process the impact of this call.”

Investigators are asking anyone with more information to contact the Special Victims Unit, or leave an anonymous tip with Peel Crime Stoppers.

Miller said a search warrant will be executed at the residence Monday with Peel police’s forensics unit.
