Country stars from Durham Region were well represented in the winner’s circle at the 14th annual Country Music Ontario Awards, which took place Sunday at Port Credit Memorial Arena in Mississauga.
Rising star Sacha, who moved to Oshawa in her junior high years, was up for three prizes and won in two major categories: Female Artist of the Year and Album of the Year for Women in the Mirror.
Tyler Lorette, an accomplished 21-year-old singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer from Courtice, tied for Breakthrough Artist of the Year with Jessica Sevier – the first tie in CMA Ontario history.
And Robin Ottolini of Uxbridge, who, like Sacha was up for three awards shared the Songwriter of the Year Award with Sevier, Dave Woods and Derek Hoffman for Good to Drive.
Owen Riegling (Mildmay in Bruce County) won all three categories he was nominated in: Male Artist of the Year, Single of the Year for Taillight this Town and the Fan Choice Award.
Other major winners included James Barker Band for Group of the Year and Ryan Cassar for Musician of the Year.
The CMAOntario Awards Show closed out the CMAOntario Festival & Awards Weekend with performances by Riegling, Lorette, Sevier, Sully Burrows, Olivia Mae Graham, Elyse Saunders, School House, Cory Marks, Les Rats d’Swompe and the CMAOntario house band The Western Swing Authority.
The CMAOntario Awards celebrate the talent and achievements of Ontario’s country music industry, honouring artists and industry professionals across 17 categories, along with special awards.
