A man hunted by police on a Canada-wide warrant for more than a week after a fatal daytime stabbing in Mississauga was arrested Friday in Toronto’s west end.

Peel Regional Police said Jerome Edwards, 28, of no fixed address, was found by homicide detectives in the area of The Queensway and Kipling Avenue in Etobicoke and taken into custody.

Edwards faces a charge of first-degree murder in connection with the deadly May 19 lunchour stabbing of Chay Wilson, 32, of Mississauga, in the vicinity of Hurontario and Dundas streets, among the busiest intersections in the city.

According to police, the two men had allegedly become involved in a physical altercation in a parking lot near Hurontario and Agnes streets just steps north of Dundas Street. It’s a busy and densely populated commercial/residential neighbourhood in the heart of Cooksville, a short distance south of Mississauga’s downtown core.

One man fled the scene moments after the violent interaction while Wilson, suffering from stab wounds, fell to the ground. Despite efforts of people in the area, in addition to first responders, to save his life, the Mississauga man was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Investigators haven’t said what may have led to the altercation between the two men.

A few days later, detectives issued a Canada-wide warrant for the arrest of Edwards, who was eventually located in west Toronto 10 days after the deadly incident.

Following his arrest, he was held in custody pending a bail hearing, police said.
