No. 12-ranked Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Featherweight Melquizael Costa has had enough of suffering through brutal weight cuts and is officially moving up to Lightweight.
The Brazilian announced the move on social media today.
“It was a good run in this [division], but my body can’t handle cutting 22 kilos for each fight anymore,” Costa wrote. “Let’s go Lightweight.”
For those wondering, 22 kilograms is equivalent to 48.5 pounds, so yeah, it’s safe to say Costa’s process of getting down to Featherweight must be absolutely miserable.
The Brazilian is currently 7-3 in UFC, and two of those losses came at Lightweight against Thiago Moises and Steve Garcia.
Now, Costa will try to make noise in one of the deepest — and most unforgiving — divisions in the entire sport.
I guess we’ll find out soon.
