An Ottawa college is getting federal money to help expand access to dental care.
On Tuesday, Ottawa-Vanier-Gloucester MP Mona Fortier, speaking on behalf of Canada’s health minister, announced $1.6 million in funding over three years for Collège La Cité.
The money will go toward a mobile dental clinic providing services to French-speaking seniors and children, plus people living in Indigenous communities who face even more barriers to medical care.
“Why those specific communities? Probably because the more obstacles you have — so the further you are, the more distance you have to [travel], the more complicated it is to find a dentist at the dental clinic that has availability,” Frédéric Thibault-Chabot, the college’s vice-president of academics and research, said following Tuesday’s announcement.
The money will also help fund a treatment room at the school for neurodivergent children and adolescents, as as well as more online training.
