One of the most recognizable voices in Canadian hockey is being honoured for a broadcasting career spanning more than four decades.

Brampton native Chris Cuthbert, the lead play-by-play announcer for Hockey Night in Canada, has been named the recipient of the 2026 Foster Hewitt Memorial Award, presented by the NHL Broadcasters’ Association and recognized by the Hockey Hall of Fame

For more than four decades, Cuthbert has called some of the sport’s biggest moments, earning a reputation as one of Canada’s premier play-by-play announcers. The Brampton-born broadcaster currently serves as the lead play-by-play voice for Hockey Night in Canada on Sportsnet and is also heard on national and regional Toronto Maple Leafs broadcasts.

Cuthbert’s career began in the late 1970s as the radio voice of the Queen’s University Golden Gaels before he moved into junior hockey broadcasting with the Yorkton Terriers of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. He later transitioned to television, building a career that included prominent roles with CBC, TSN, NBC and Sportsnet.

Among his most memorable calls was Sidney Crosby’s overtime “Golden Goal” for Canada at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, a moment that remains one of the most iconic in Canadian sports history.

In addition to hockey, Cuthbert has been a familiar voice to football fans, serving as the lead play-by-play announcer for CFL broadcasts on TSN for more than a decade. Throughout his career, he has received numerous accolades, including three Gemini Awards and two Canadian Screen Awards.

The Hockey Hall of Fame said Cuthbert’s energetic and distinctive play-by-play style has connected generations of hockey fans across the country and helped cement his place among Canada’s most respected sports broadcasters.

The Foster Hewitt Memorial Award is named after the legendary “Voice of Hockey” and has been presented since 1984 by the NHL Broadcasters’ Association.

Cuthbert will receive the honour during the Hockey Hall of Fame NHL Media Awards Luncheon in Toronto on Nov. 9 as part of the 2026 Hockey Hall of Fame Induction Weekend.
