Sensory-friendly event to be held at Museum of Surrey

The Museum of Surrey’s annual sensory-friendly event—called Sensory Fun—returns June 20.
Museum-goers will be presented with an array of hands-on activities both inside the museum and outside on the heritage campus. Activities will include: summertime crafts, sensory bins, outdoor games, a scavenger hunt, face painting, and a photo area by APS Photobooth.
Lynn Saffery, museum manager, said in a press release he was “looking forward” the event.
”Finding ways to ensure that everyone in Surrey can access museum programs and events is so important to us,” he said. “We will continue to be free of charge, provide accessibility opportunities, and ensure everyone is welcome.”
The museum will have several community partners on site and many of them will host activities, such as: Honeybee Centre, Surrey Nature Centre, Surrey Natural Areas Partnership, Surrey United Soccer, Centre of Child Development, Autism Community Training, and others.
According to the release, “Guests are also invited to explore the galleries, connect with local organizations at community booths, and enjoy refreshing bubble tea and dirty sodas available for purchase from Bubble T Xpress.”
Sensory Fun will also have a sensory room open. The room will be facilitated by the Canucks Autism Network. It will provice a “calm and supportive environment” for museum-goers who would like a quiet area during the event.
The Museum of Surrey has provided sensory-focused experiences on site since 2019—in collaboration with the Canucks Autism Network—when they started operating sensory-friendly hours (10 a.m. to 12 p.m.) on the first Sunday of every month.
During sensory-friendly hours, the museum reduces the lighting and sound levels throughout the building for those sensitive to higher levels of both. The museum also offers noise-cancelling headphones at all times for guests.
Sensory Fun will run on June 20 from 12 – 4 p.m. at the Museum of Surrey, 17710 56A Avenue in Cloverdale. Entrance is free.
