Sony and Santa Monica Studio have officially unveiled God of War: Laufey, the next major instalment in the long-running action–adventure series. Announced during PlayStation’s State of Play presentation on 2 June, the game marks a significant departure for the franchise by placing Laufey, better known as Faye, in the role of protagonist.
Faye, the wife of Kratos and mother of Atreus, has remained one of the most important yet mysterious figures in the Norse saga. Although her death set the events of 2018’s God of War in motion, players have so far only encountered the character through memories, stories and prophetic clues.
God of War: Laufey aims to change that. Deborah Ann Woll, known for her work on True Blood and Daredevil will reprise her role as the titular character.
According to Sony’s official description, the game begins after Faye’s funeral. Awakening in a mysterious realm known as the Everywhen, she discovers that the plans she set in motion to protect her family are under threat. The story follows her journey through a divine afterlife as she attempts to safeguard the future of Kratos and Atreus.
While some fans initially assumed the title would serve as a prequel, Santa Monica Studio creative director Cory Barlog has stated that Laufey is instead a continuation of the existing timeline. Rather than exploring Faye’s life before her death, the game appears to run parallel to the opening events of God of War (2018), revealing what happened to her after she passed away.

The Everywhen introduces a new setting for the series. Described as an afterlife for gods, the realm appears to bring together deities and mythological figures from multiple pantheons. Early footage suggests that reality and time behave differently within the Everywhen, creating opportunities for encounters beyond the Norse mythology that has defined the franchise since 2018.
One of the most notable revelations from the gameplay presentation is the apparent inclusion of Egyptian mythology. Observers have pointed to references to the Egyptian war goddess Sekhmet and other non-Norse influences, fuelling speculation that Santa Monica Studio is laying the groundwork for the franchise’s next mythological era.
Sony showcased more than 20 minutes of gameplay during the reveal. Faye’s combat style differs significantly from Kratos’ heavy-hitting approach, emphasizing speed, agility and magical abilities. She primarily wields a sword, while several combat sequences hint at mechanics tied to souls and spiritual energy. The footage also introduced a mysterious slime-like cube companion who accompanies Faye during parts of her journey.
Despite the shift in protagonist and setting, the game retains many of the qualities that have defined the modern God of War series, including cinematic storytelling, over-the-shoulder action combat and a strong narrative focus.
The project also promises to shed light on several lingering mysteries surrounding Faye herself. Fans are hoping to learn more about her prophetic abilities, the extent of her powers, and the reasons behind the carefully orchestrated path she left for Kratos and Atreus.
God of War: Laufey is currently confirmed for PlayStation 5, though Sony has not announced a release date. No PC version has been revealed at this stage, and following Sony’s announcements in the past year, there may not be one.
The announcement has generated strong reactions within the gaming community. Many players have welcomed the opportunity to explore one of the franchise’s most enigmatic characters, while others have expressed disappointment that the next chapter does not focus on Kratos or Atreus.
Regardless of the debate, Laufey represents one of the most ambitious departures in God of War‘s history and may offer the clearest indication yet of where Santa Monica Studio plans to take the series next.
