It may seem quiet here at Prairie Theatre Exchange, but a closed rehearsal is taking place for a very high-profile show coming to Rainbow Stage later this month, to kick off the theatre’s summer season
The theatre enjoyed a record-breaking 2025, highlighted by Disney’s Frozen last August, which had the most sellouts ever in the theatre’s 72-year history, and they’re hoping to carry some of that success to 2026.
“We’re starting this season with Jesus Christ Superstar, so this is the first time this show has ever been done at Rainbow, first time it’s ever been done within any of the local theatre companies, and so it’s already breaking the records of our Rock of Ages sales, so people are clearly building on the success of last year,” said Carson Nattras, the artistic director of Rainbow Stage.
Director Sharon Bajer, along with a cast comprised of almost all local talent, is hard at work getting the show ready for its June 25 opening night.
“I think it’s such a theatrical, dynamic, passionate, fun, groovy story that has never been done at Rainbow, so why not do it,” said Bajer.
“Audiences can expect to see a killer, talented cast. You can’t do this show without a Jesus or a Judas that can sing the lights out, high-high tenor rock, and we have two fabulous performers in Connor Meek who’s playing Jesus, and Nathanial Muir who’s playing Judas.”
Adding to the excitement, theatre-goers can expect some big changes when they arrive at Rainbow. Ongoing Renovations have been building on the space since 2018, with funding help from the city. Some of those renos are ready to be unveiled when the season opens.
“You’re going to see landscaping outside the building that is going to welcome in an outdoor courtyard, new bathrooms on the house left sides, new concessions, and an outdoor space so you can stand under stars and enjoy a drink at intermission,” said Nattras.
It isn’t the only Winnipeg theatre to enjoy recent success; other local theatres like MTC and Prairie Theatre Exchange have also seen strong box office numbers over the past year. It’s clear, the Winnipeg theatre scene is having a moment.
“This larger conversation around how technology is moving into human spaces. Live theatre will never be replaced. I think it’s a moment where we can go and touch grass, and see real connection between people,” said Nattras.
Jesus Christ Superstar opens on June 25.
