Victoria Muslim community receives grant to document early history in B.C.

British Columbia Historical Federation has awarded a $5,000 Centennial Legacy Fund grant to the Vancouver Island Muslim Association. The grant will support conducting archival research and capturing oral histories from elders, long-term residents, and community leaders.

It will also help the Vancouver Island Muslim Association to research, identify, and interview early Muslim residents of British Columbia and document their histories.

Materials compiled will be made publicly available through the Muslims in Canada Archive, which currently has no entries related to British Columbia.

The project expects to honour community histories and to create greater cross-cultural understanding and a stronger sense of belonging. Those with materials or memories to contribute can send them via email to vimuslims@gmail.com.

The Centennial Legacy Fund was created by the British Columbia Historical Federation to help research into B.C.’s stories, communities and diverse peoples.
