Almost 28,000 people in the Sudbury federal riding are anticipated to receive the benefit
Almost 28,000 people in the Sudbury federal riding will receive a share of approximately $13 million of the new Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit on June 5.
The program is a rebrand of the previous GST/HST credit.
It is functionally the same, but quarterly payment amounts will increase by 25 per cent for five years. The one-time top-up which was expected to come in on June 5 is 50 per cent of recipients’ total annual GST/HST credit for the period of July 2025 to July 2026.
Click here for its eligibility criteria, which is based on income level thresholds. The lowest-end maximum income level threshold (a single person with no children) in 2024 was $56,181.
After this one-time payment, eligible families will start receiving enhanced quarterly payments under the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit as of July 2026.
These combined measures mean a family of four will receive up to $1,890 this year, and approximately $1,400 annually for the next four years. A single person will receive up to $950 this year, and approximately $700 annually for the next four years.
“This benefit makes a difference in people’s lives right now, for those who need it most. Whether it is helping families put food on the table, keep up with rent, or cover other essential costs, this support is providing meaningful relief,” Sudbury MP Viviane Lapointe said in a media release.
“It’s just one of the ways our government is making life more affordable and to ensure people have some stability in these tough times.”
