An Edmonton man wanted for first-degree murder in connection with a fatal shooting in Ottawa more than two years ago is in custody after being arrested in Turkey, police say.
Gibriil Bakal, 31, was arrested after a fingerprint check at the Turkish border matched an Interpol “red notice,” Ottawa police said Saturday.
Those notices alert police forces worldwide about suspects trying to evade justice.
Bakal was wanted in the killing of 33-year-old Jama Roble, who was shot on Champagne Avenue South near Little Italy on Jan. 29, 2024.
Roble later died of his injuries in hospital.
After his arrest, Turkish authorities alerted the RCMP and Bakal was returned to Canada. He appeared in court in Ottawa on Saturday, police said.
Bakal is the second person to be arrested in connection with Roble’s death.
