A 44-year-old woman was in a hospital after being stabbed inside an apartment in Montreal Saturday morning, according to police, who said a suspect had barricaded himself inside the residence as officers attempted to negotiate his surrender.
By early afternoon, a 57-year-old man had been arrested.
The stabbing incident occurred around 9 a.m. on Terrace Elgin, near St-Martin St., according to Jean-Pierre Brabant, a spokesperson for the Montreal police.
When officers arrived at the scene, he said, they found the woman suffering from stab wounds to her upper body. She was conscious when taken to a nearby hospital. She was at first considered to be in critical condition, but police said later that was no longer the case.
Brabant said they believe the stabbing followed a dispute between the woman and the man inside the apartment. After the attack, the woman fled the apartment and sought refuge at a neighbouring residence, where she was found by responding officers.
The suspect remained barricaded inside the apartment Saturday morning, Brabant said.
Police established a security perimeter around the building and removed some nearby residents as a precaution.
Officers then attempted to establish communication with the man in an effort to persuade him to surrender peacefully.
