Collaboration between units of the Sûreté du Québec and the Kahnawake Peacekeepers led to the arrest of a young driver following a high-speed chase.
A 23-year-old Châteauguay man was arrested early Saturday after a chase involving SQ officers with the Candiac and Montreal detachments as well as the Peacekeepers.
The incident began at about 2:30 a.m., when SQ officers with the Candiac detachment observed a vehicle without licence plates on Highway 15 North near the Samuel-De Champlain Bridge, according to a statement from the SQ.
On spotting the police officers, the driver immediately took off. The Candiac officers communicated with colleagues in the Montreal SQ detachment, who took over as the driver headed into their territory on Highway 20 West. The vehicle was clocked travelling at 217 km/h in a 70 km/h zone — a speed that made it impossible to intercept the vehicle safely.
As the driver took Route 138 West toward the Mercier Bridge, the Kahnawake Peacekeepers were called in. They located the vehicle, which had stopped in the parking lot of a business on their territory.
The suspect again tried to flee, but collided with a Peacekeeper vehicle, causing his vehicle to become inoperable. He was arrested on the spot.
The SQ said the driver could face various charges, including flight and armed assault. He also received several tickets, his vehicle was seized for 30 days and his driver’s licence was suspended for seven days.
The SQ and the Kahnawake Peacekeepers are leading independent investigations in connection with the driver’s actions on their respective territories, but will file a joint submission to the Directeur des poursuites criminelles et pénales. A DPCP prosecutor will analyze the evidence to decide whether to authorize charges and, if so, what charges.
