And collective hearts across Canada love Cape Breton’s The Barra Macneils.
The Maritimes-based family group hits the road for their cross-country 40th Anniversary Tour which features a stop in Vernon on Wednesday, June 24, 7:30 p.m., at the Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre (VDPAC).
The gig is part of the Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre Society’s Signature Series concerts.
“For four decades, The Barra MacNeils have been thrilling audiences of all ages, near and far, with their sparkling repertoire, vocals, instrumental prowess and vibrant showmanship,” said VDPAC executive director Jim Harding. “They return to the VDPAC following their unforgettable, sold-out 25th anniversary of their An East Coast Christmas concert at VDPAC last November.”
Now in 2026, the MacNeils celebrate their 40th Anniversary with an extensive, year-long cross-Canada tour, with major stops including summer festival appearances spanning coast to coast.
This year’s concerts offer an intimate, heartfelt reflection on their career, featuring fan favourites and hidden gems from their 17 critically acclaimed, multi-award-winning albums.
Whether performing original compositions or time-honoured standards, the Barra MacNeils remain steadfast in their mission to provide world-class family entertainment that carries the heart of Cape Breton to the world.
From humble beginnings, their world-wide acclaim has been built on their signature family harmonies, fun-filled storytelling, and high-energy East Coast and Celtic music.
From Sydney Mines, NS., the founding members were siblings Sheumas, Kyle, Stewart and Lucy – all of them MacNeils – who began performing together in 1980 while still teenagers, (Lucy being only 10-years-old). Consequently, they were only able to perform on weekends, and toured during school holidays.
The Scottish island of Barra was adopted for the band’s name as the ancestral home of Clan MacNeil.
The siblings are all classically trained musicians and alumni of Mount Allison University.
In 1986, they released their first self-titled album on their own independent label. The Barra MacNeils won their first East Coast Music Award in 1991, and have won four more since, including a JUNO Award for Album of the Year for Time Frame in 1992; and a Group of the Year award (2001).
They signed with PolyGram, and their first two albums were re-released, while their album Closer To Paradise (1993) earned the band a Gold Record. The Christmas Album was released in 1999, launching their universally popular annual An East Coast Christmas tour, followed by the album Racket in the Attic (2000) and All at Once (2005) — at which time, two additional MacNeil brothers, Ryan and Boyd, joined the band.
The Christmas Album II (2006) and The 20th Anniversary Collection (2007) followed.
The Barra MacNeils have garnered 15 East Coast Music Award nominations — winning five.
As a group, the MacNeil siblings are widely regarded as one of the greatest live concert acts in the Celtic world, deeply rooted in Celtic music, culture, dance, language and history. Their numerous critically acclaimed recordings have included their own original songs as well as tried and true standards, both instrumental and vocal.
Their love of performing has routinely taken the group to theatre and festival stages multiple times across Canada; has them jetting across America from festival stage to theatre stages and beyond; as well as sending them to Ireland and Scotland for prestigious Celtic events across the Atlantic.
The Barra MacNeils live concert experience brings so much more to the stage than most live acts ever can.
Multiple lead vocalists, beautiful sibling harmonies, top drawer instrumental prowess on a wide variety of acoustic, stringed, percussion and wind instruments blended with dancing, and often tall-tale storytelling, Gaelic songs and a journey through an ancient culture; it is always family entertainment at its highest level.
The VDPAC Society introduced its now annual Signature Concert Series to complement, and as a series of benefits in support of, the Society’s annual SPOTLIGHT Season programming.
